Powerspark Lucas 45D6 Distributor for Lucas Style Mounts 6 Cylinder Engines with Electronic Ignition - Negative Earth D61-Powerspark
Powerspark Lucas 45D6 Distributor for Lucas Style Mounts 6 Cylinder Engines with Electronic Ignition - Negative Earth D61-Powerspark
Lucas 45D Distributor
Triumph and many other 6 Cylinder 45D6 Type Distributor
Fitted with Electronic Ignition Kit and wired for negative Earth cars.
(Note this Lucas type distributor will NOT fit the Ford Zephyr and Zodiac cars. We have separate models for that application)
Powerspark Lucas 45D6 Distributor Top Entry
The Powerspark 45D6 distributor is a direct replacement for your Lucas 22D6 or 45D6 distributor.
This high quality reproduction has been selling for over 15 years. The advance curve is specific to 6 cylinder vehicles.
Electronic variants come with the patented Powerspark Electronic Ignition module inside to make running and starting easier and smoother.
Looks like an original points distributor but contains an electronic ignition module that uses a magnetic pickup instead of contact breaker points.
Fitment of the Lucas 45D6 6 Cylinder Distributor includes and is not limited to:

Ballast Resistance Coils and Wiring and Triumph Cars (and some other Makes as well)
To the best of our knowledge the ceramic block ballast resistor was used
on the pre-facelift Triumph 2000 cars (up to May 74) with the 25D6 distributor, and then it
changed to the resistor wire on the later cars with the 45D6 type distributor. The Resistor Wire ran from the Ignition Switch to the Coil.
Fitting a Powerspark Electronic Module module is not an issue for these cars - it's just about getting the right
coil to go with the ignition system.
If you have a ballast resistor then you'll need a 1.5 Ohm coil (such as the
Viper VC110 or DLB102)
If you DON'T have Ballast Resistor then you'll need a standard 3.0 Ohm coil (such as the DLB105 Lucas Gold or Viper VCS)
The resistor (wire) can be bypassed if desired by installing a suitable grade of normal insulated wire from the Ignition switch to the Coil and a 3.0 Ohm coil. The car will run perfectly well like this.
Triumph were certainly fitting Ballast resistor systems to most of their cars by the 70s, as the
idea was that it helped with cold starting.
Most other manufacturers were experimenting with them as well, except for
Volkswagen (or at least not on the air-cooled VW's)
Key Aspects of the Triumph Mk2 Ballast System:
Identification:
A white/pink wire usually indicates a ballast resistor wire (around 1.35 -1.6 Ohms) instead of a ceramic block.
- Testing: If the coil positive side measures roughly 6 - 9 volts when the ignition is "on," the ballast is fitted;12V volts indicates no ballast system is fitted.
- Coil Type Required : Ballast systems require a specific coil (like the Lucas DLB102, 1.5 ohm or Viper VC110 ).
- Upgrades: When switching to electronic ignition, it may be preferable to remove the resistor for a direct feed, often paired with a non-ballasted coil.
Sports Electronic Ignition Distributors:
- To be used with a Standard or Sports
ignition coil, resistance reading above 1.4 ohms.
Not suitable for use with copper HT Leads. We do require Silicone HT Leads for use with the Electronic Modules
