Cotter Pin
A Split Pin or Cotter pin (commonly known as a split pin in the
U.S. and parts of British English) is a metal fastener made from a single
length of wire folded in half to form a U-shape with a looped or rounded head
(the eye.)
How It Works
- Insertion: The two prongs (legs) are inserted
through a pre-drilled transverse hole in a bolt, axle, shaft, or clevis
pin.
- Locking: Once pushed through, the legs are bent
apart (typically outward and around the fastener) to prevent the pin from
backing out.
- Retention: It acts as a mechanical stop to keep
components like castellated nuts from vibrating loose.
Common Types of Cotter Pins
- Split
Cotter Pin: The
traditional two-prong wire pin where the legs are manually bent apart
after installation.
- Hairpin
Cotter Pin (R-Clip):
Shaped like the letter "R," this spring-steel clip snaps into
place around a shaft or pin for fast removal and reusability.
- Self-Locking
Cotter Pins: Variations
like bow-tie or Rue Ring pins feature built-in latching mechanisms that
lock without needing the prongs bent by hand.
- Common
Applications
- Automotive
& Machinery: Securing
wheel bearings, axle nuts, and linkage pins.
- Bicycles
& Engines: Holding
pedal cranks or mechanical rods in alignment.
- Hardware
& Towing: Locking
hitch pins on trailers, farm equipment, and lawn mowers.
