These Half Depth Nuts are often used as Lock Nuts or indeed as the securing nut when there is not enough depth of thread to allow a normal Nyloc to gain adequate " Bite "on the thread of the studs. 

Sometimes called the Thin nut, these Half Nuts are to be found on many of our Classic cars.
