A CV joint boot or a constant velocity boot is a ribbed, rubber flexible boot that keeps water and dirt out of the joint and keeps the grease that lubricates it inside.

When the boot fails, it opens the potential for the joint to become damaged by contamination which can lead to potentially serious problems.
